Customer Case Portbase:
Portbase was established in 2009 by the Port of Rotterdam Authority and the Port of Amsterdam. It was created by merging the activities of Rotterdam Port Infolink and Amsterdam PortNET. Portbase’s ambition is to make the logistics chains of the Dutch ports as attractive as possible through a one-stop shop, and it has the broad support of the business community in both harbours. To this end, Portbase has build the Port Community System (PCS), a digital platform with which all port-related companies can communicate with each other and with governments. With its stakeholders it strives to make the Dutch ports the smartest ports in Europe by facilitating integrated, real-time planning of the logistics chain, strengthening the ecosystem of the Dutch ports and the realization of paperless ports. You could say: Portbase is the digital strategy of Dutch port authorities. A Digital Enterprise avant le lettre. Well done!
The ecosystem of the port of Rotterdam:
With 14,000 users and 82 million messages per year, Portbase is a success story. But success also attracts new users, so in addition to facilitating current message traffic, new opportunities occur and requests for new information services are coming in constantly. Moreover, the PCS is an open platform which means that other parties within the ecosystem can also develop applications with which they want to link with the PCS. This creates the need for a platform on which not only production can be run, but at the same time new applications can be developed with which external data sources can easily be linked and on which Big Data analyzes can be performed. So there is no lack of innovative ideas, but it is a huge challenge for Portbase to facilitate and lead them in the right direction. Even more by the fact that the platform was hosted by a System Integrator and more often then not Portbase was confronted with the limited flexibility, both technically and organisationally, on that side.
Portbase needed a Cloud Strategy by which these challenges could be addressed. After mapping out the desired functionality of the new platform, market research, drawing up a Business Case and a thorough analysis of the requirements regarding Cloud Governance (compliancy, risk, security, continuity and budget monitoring), a Public Cloud with advanced infrastructure (Infrastructure-as-a-Service) and development services (Platform-as-a-Service) was the way to go. AWS was selected for a number of reasons:
- AWS offers an API Gateway, with which you can quickly link external information sources or applications of other players in the ecosystem
- AWS has on-board Big Data tools, which can easily be integrated to quickly perform calculations and big data analysis
- AWS has many more out-of-the-box capabilities, with which the speed of innovation can be significantly increased
By using a cloud-based infrastructure and development platform, Portbase can continue to meet the increasing demand for new information services and the development of new applications in co-creation with the partners in the ecosystem of Dutch ports. In this way it creates a platform that not only provides scalable production capacity, but also facilitates an acceleration of innovation, making the Dutch ports the smartest in Europe. In the words of prof. Dr. Olaf Merk: “Smart ports are the only ports that will survive”.
Thanks to the switch to the cloud, we can guarantee our four thousand customers high reliability in long term
